Independence for Montenegro
On Sunday there was a referendum in Montenegro and the majority voted for independence from Serbia.( http://www.nzherald.co.nz/search/story.cfm?storyid=000DC4B5-1D82-1472-9C7883027AF100AD ) On Monday (yesterday) we went to the new independent country of Montenegro where we got to be a part of history.
We started our tour by going to town of Kotor which is situated on the gorgeous Bay of Kotor. From there we drove up the mountains on numerous serpentines cut into the slopes. That was most definitely not a trip for the faint-hearted. It was a looooooong way down and the road was so narrow I can't imagine what would of happened if we'd come across another bus coming down. However, the view was AMAZING! After stopping near the top to admire the incredible view we went to have lunch in the tiny town of Njegusi. To celebrate independence we all got given free shots of something incredibly strong. The locals in the restaurant down the street were all singing and celebrating. After lunch as we were walking to get a closer look a car pulled up outside the restaurant and a man got out and starting shooting his rifle at the sky in celebration. That was a bit too exciting for us tourists so we retreated.
The next stop was the old capital of Cetinje where a drunk man and his drunk friends stopped our bus to give us a free bottle of more stong alcohol and to shoot a pistol at the sky. A policeman wandered over to see why the bus was stopped in the middle of the road - nevermind the drunk man shooting a pistol. Things are certainly different in the Balkans! We visited a royal palace (Montenegro was a monarchy for just 8 years!). Outside they were setting up for a big independence celebration and there was a huge cow roasting on a spit.
Our last stop was the pretty tourist city of Bodva, and then it was back to Croatia after a great day we'll never forget.
